There is a lot of talk about college readiness. If we were to scan the freshman course syllabi of a diverse cross-section of universities across the country, what would we see? What would we learn about college readiness? How could these insights inform our approach to high school curriculum and assessment? Come join us for a paradigm-shifting workshop on not just the “what” of performance-based assessments, but the “why” and “how” of rigorous, well-scaffolded performance assessments that ensure all learners have access to continuous college-preparatory learning experiences. In this design workshop, we will kick off by sharing the findings of a recent study on college freshman workload and discussing its implications for our own places of practice. Participants will have the opportunity to investigate the anatomy of exemplar performance tasks engineered backward from college readiness expectations, and then engage in a guided task design experience. Finally, practitioners will be introduced to a powerful “Opportunity Mapping” strategy to support instructional teams in aligning efforts and developing a powerful, school- or system-wide assessment strategy that ensures all students have the opportunity to develop the skills and stamina in order to be adequately prepared for college-level performance and workload expectations.
