Limited Capacity full

Organizational theory suggests that values, vision, and shared mental models—a school’s organizational culture—play an outsized role in the design and enactment of systems for deeper learning. The School Success Model developed by the Educational Policy Improvement Center provides one approach to build an organizational culture that informs every decision and programmatic element of the school. In this workshop, facilitators will guide participants through the process of interrogating organizational culture to discover the implications across systems and structures in a school. Participants will engage through hypothetical scenarios, role playing, and arts integrated enactment. Participants will begin by choosing a school organization scenario salient to their own experience. In groups of four or more participants, each will assume and own a role that they feel comfortable playing (e.g., administrator, teacher, student). Each of these roles will adopt a perspective to guide their contributions throughout the workshop. After forming, groups will respond to stages of challenges within their hypothetical school and use those opportunities to assess organizational culture, consolidate a shared vision, and craft a unifying framework for learning. All groups will progress through the same stages in response to their unique organizational scenarios. These stages include a variety of arts-integrated experiences designed to establish safe, inclusive experiences for all perspectives, especially those often marginalized from this kind of dialogue. Activities include sculpting a portrait of a graduate from clay, determining the common vernacular for a framework, enacting those components in response to a challenge/opportunity using theater, interrogating the structures and systems using the School Success Model, and writing and performing spoken word to bring the unifying framework to life for other groups. Participants will leave this workshop with a deeper understanding of organizational culture with tools to enact positive transformation in their own school communities.
