The Coalition of Essential Schools held its Final Fall Forum this past November in Providence Rhode Island. The Board of Directors, including founding members of this profoundly influential 33-year-old school reform movement, is in the process of disbanding. Support for the remaining members of the national network will lie with regional centers. In the first part of this session, practitioners with ties to or an interest in the Coalition of Essential Schools will gather to tell stories out of their Coalition experience, particularly to share stories about how the Coalition principles supported their practice or shaped their lives. In the second hour, participants will reflect on ways in which Coalition practices and principles are manifest in their existing schools or networks. Finally, we will use a tuning protocol to “vet” the Coalition principles, considering whether they remain a robust and sufficient set of principles for deeper learning in today’s schools. We will conclude with a discussion of ways to continue the work of Ted Sizer and the Coalition. The work of Critical Friendship was an integral part of the work of the Coalition. We will honor that work in this session by using protocols to move through the levels of sharing, examining, deepening, and extending our experiences.
