How can exploring, making, and reflecting on digital portraits deepen teens’ self-awareness toward taking action in the world? Teaching artists and English Language Arts teachers in the New Visions Charter (NVC)-Lincoln Center Education (LCE) partnership have explored this question with 9th grade students over the past two years, and have refined the process of inspiring students to create identity portfolios as a first step in taking action toward changing the world, based on the questions: Who am I? How did I become who I am today? How do I wish to represent myself and take action in the world?
  • The workshop will guide participants on their own inquiry-based aesthetic journey that mirrors the students’ process, featuring exploration of Brandon Stanton’s digital portfolio “Humans of New York”, individual art-making, and LCE’s Capacities for Imaginative Thinking.
  • We’ll unpack this experience, interact with student work exemplars, and analyze the teaching process for the project. We will brainstorm participants' applications to their students and settings.
  • A few details: We’ll use participants' phones, tablets, or laptops to take photos. Our main focus is on the learning process, and not limited to technical aspects of digital photography. Photography skills are most welcome but NOT required. The process described above has been thoroughly integrated into English Language Arts curriculum, co-taught by teachers and teaching artists at New Visions Charter HS for Advanced Math and Science and other NVC schools.
