What if schools designed learning experiences so young people could develop not only deep content knowledge but also agency, an integrated identity, and the competencies they’ll need for work, family, and civic life? What if schools were organized to support the learning and development of educators in a way that nourished both their hearts and minds? What if schools disrupted systems of racism and inequality and guaranteed a transformational education for every child? These questions have propelled the work of our team at the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research for the past five years. In this 3-hour workshop, we provide a set of powerful learning experiences for participants as they explore questions of equity in education, dig into the science of learning and development, and then apply what they’ve learned to create either a lesson plan for their students (PreK-12) or a professional learning session for adult educators. We’ll provide each participant with a copy of our 2015 report, Foundations for Young Adult Success: A Developmental Framework, and make sure you walk away with the tools and knowledge to embed catalytic “developmental experiences” into every lesson you design. Just as importantly, we hope you leave feeling renewed and inspired for the work ahead!
