Limited Capacity full

For more than 30 years, through several different eras of education policy, the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) supported schools committed to Deeper Learning-related principles and practices. Six schools that have been at this work for the long haul (15+ years)--Blackstone Academy Charter School, Boston Day and Evening Academy, Federal Hocking High School, Lehman Alternative Community School, Mission Hill School, and Noble High School--offer insights into leadership development and succession, sustainability, adaptability, tactics, developing allies, marshaling evidence, navigating challenges, building culture, negotiating policy shifts, and more. These schools are survivors, holding the course when many others were unable to move forward with great ideas and meaningful commitments.

Participants will share questions and dilemmas and will receive guidance, resources, and support to emerge with plans for and approaches to staying committed to Deeper Learning for the long haul. Summaries and analysis of research conducted with schools with compelling histories of commitment to Deeper Learning competencies will provide insights that participants will use to jumpstart, accelerate, extend, deepen, and improve their schools' plans to navigate obstacles and thrive across the decades. Participants will dig into challenges and offer support, questions, and ideas to emerge with:
  • Deepened understanding of what it takes to build long-term commitment to Deeper Learning
  • Information and inspiration for creating long-term plans for sustained Deeper Learning commitment with their colleagues and school communities
  • Tools, tactics, and resources to face local, state, and federal policy shifts.

This workshop uses an equity lens and a commitment to acknowledge and understand disparities to ensure that all voices and perspectives matter.
