This session provides an introduction to and demonstration of a novel listening technique called Guided Storytelling Interviewing (GSI). The GSI is unique in its ability to surface needs and performance-related information by facilitating student retelling of meaningful stories. Students’ needs and capacities (competencies and non-cognitive attributes) in specific contexts are revealed in the retelling of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors around specific positive and negative school experiences. Our deeper listening technique will be brought to life through an examination of its use at the Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA) to provide an empirical basis to define and measure their Habits of Scholarship, namely collaboration, craftsmanship, perseverance, and responsibility. Participants will be engaged by joining us as co-researchers in our project. The theoretical framework and methodology will be provided as a back drop from which we can observe a live GSI demonstration and analyze an actual student’s stories. Participants will leave with an understanding of the GSI technique and multiple applications that will enable them to deeply listen to their students’ needs, wants, and desires and to utilize this information to truly personalize the learning experience of every student.
