Supported by the Escondido community and business leaders, Del Lago Academy opened in 2013 to create a school-to college and career pipeline connecting local students to STEM related careers within our region. With a curricular focus on biotechnology, the science department developed Competency X to address a concern that students are not transferring what they learn in the classroom to the industry setting. In this program, students curate learning artifacts from competency based assessments and internship experiences on science and engineering practices that are tied to learning progressions across all four grades at the school. They reflect on artifacts in a digital portfolio about how they represent the skills, knowledge, and dispositions required to earn a digital badge. When students earn a digital badge, they use it to earn internships and do more intentional skill development work within the internship. The big picture vision for Competency X is that we are a working model for a larger workforce development pipeline in our region. Student presenters will share examples of how this system works to support continuous growth that results in a meaningful certification of their laboratory based skill sets for future workforce success. Resources will be shared about how biotechnology industry partnerships and digital technology were used to help make this system work. Exemplars will be shared on how badges can be used as an assessment tool for personalizing skill development. Participants will design a digital badge for a course or workforce learning experience.
