Limited Capacity full

This dive will examine how to deeply engage students in school by looking at learning through student interests, practice and relationships outside of school. At this deep dive, participants will work with students who are Harbor Freight Fellows from MetWest in Oakland and Met Sacramento. By the end of the dive, participants will be developing ways to engage students around their interests, practice and relationships especially, with students who are involved in the trades and crafts. Also, we will use Big Picture Learning's ImBlaze internship management system to show how student work can be accounted for when they are outside of school. Participants will be taken through a series of hands-on activities that illustrate the deep power of this work. They will develop their own programs around learning through student interests, practices and relationships.

Deeper Learning for All Students: Advancing Competencies for Educational Equity
Limited Capacity full

This deep dive explores ideas about educational equity as it relates to Deeper Learning (DL).
Are the DL competencies meant for all students or just a fortunate few? In order to deliver on a promise to make DL a possibility for all, educators and advocates must themselves develop
competencies in enacting educational equity. Given the vast diversity in our student populations and the complex political realities in our systems, what must we understand and be able to do in our everyday practice to ensure educational equity? Can we articulate the competencies we need to develop?  Believing that a shared vision will strengthen our work as educators and as social justice advocates, we want to build a common understanding by articulating the competencies that ground this work. Drawing from seminal books, authors, personal experiences, and shared reflections, participants in this workshop will collaborate to articulate competencies for the educators and advocates who promote DL.

As Deeper Learning Equity Fellows, the deep dive facilitators seek to bridge the worlds of Deeper Learning and Equity through our projects. Sharing examples from our work and personal journeys, we hope to support the momentum and optimism that drives the DL movement.

Deeper Learning in Elementary Mathematics: What Can We Learn from the Strategies Students Use
Limited Capacity full

In the pursuit of shifting mathematical agency and fostering dialogue that is centered around student thinking, we will explore student solution strategies, analyze student work and consider application in the classroom. Students intuitively solve math problems in ways that demonstrate their conceptual understanding and evolve over time. By considering student thinking, educators are better equipped to orchestrate deeper learning. In this workshop geared for elementary school teachers, participants will experience these strategies first hand and leave with a framework to support increased agency and dialogue in classroom instruction. For exhibition, we will create a supersized framework board with our “Math Vision” statements and our Anticipatory Planning Frameworks for each of the tasks we created.

Deeper Learning Through Curation of Student Work: Making Curation a Reality in Your School
Limited Capacity full

Curator comes from the latin term, curare, meaning "to take care."  As a result of engagement in this dive, participants will develop their understanding of curation, what it is, and how it can become a reality in their schools.  This dive will demonstrate how students and educators in a small rural school district have used curation to scale deeper learning, positively impact school culture, drive school improvement, and engage their community.  Participants will then begin their journey towards curation of student work in their schools.   By the end of the dive, participants will create a visual presentation to share, engage, and inspire their school community and create a plan of action to curate student work in their schools.   We will participate in a scavenger hunt (of sorts) so bring your camera or smart phone, a project idea or two, and a laptop to facilitate the development of your presentation and plan of action.

Empathy-based hacking for school-wide change toward Deeper Learning
Limited Capacity filling up

Changes at the school level are often hard to “hack,” and how do you know if what you think needs to be changed will be impactful for students? In this Deep Dive with the School Retool team, we’ll explore how a deep empathy experience lead to insights and aspirations. We’ll then try on a hack mindset and use designable levers for change—like role, ritual, and space, to take first steps toward change at your school. We’ll hear from experienced School Retool hackers as we brainstorm based on big ideas from Deeper Learning schools, and work together to design hacks that you can try at your school right away. Before you come, join the Shadow a Student Challenge and experience life as a student in your school. In the Deep Dive, we’ll debrief the shadow experience and design next steps for action.

Trapped in classrooms where only boring lectures and rote memorization are occurring, many students dream of escape...  But what if the very act of escaping from a classroom became an opportunity for all sorts of deeper learning?  In this summit, we will take a trip to a "puzzle room," where we will have a limited amount of time to collaboratively solve a series of puzzles in order to escape!  Once back, we will unpack and hack the puzzle room experience--how could we use available materials and space in our schools to create similar collaborative, problem solving experiences for our students?

How To Make A Comic-Book About Anything (the low budget version)
Limited Capacity filling up

Almost anyone who hasn’t made a comic assumes that you need to be “good at art” (*shudder*) to even entertain the possibility of making a comic-story work. Not so! This deep dive will show participants that all humans have the ability to tell stories using words and pictures, and reconnect learners with one of the most powerful communication processes for people of all ages. Participants will create a four page mini-comic of their own using the exact materials that can be used by your classroom students. The best part? The entire project is designed to work on a realistic classroom budget!

This project has been refined over the years and is modified from an original process developed for the Buck Institute PBLU.org resource as well as a popular massive open online PBL course on Coursera.

Know Thyself: Deeper Learning through Personal Development
Limited Capacity full

Did you know that according to a recent Gallup Poll, by the time students graduate in the US fewer than 30% are engaged, feel successful, or enjoy what they are learning in school? As they continue to their career, only 13% of the world’s workers are engaged in their work. In contrast, the world today requires creative, passionate, and skilled individuals. To harness the power in each of us, we need to create systems that allow for more personal learning experiences and tap into the strengths and potential of each individual. In this workshop, we'll bring the Ancient Greek maxim “know thyself” to life.  We will explore our own strengths, interests, and values and tinker our way to better schools that empower all learners to discover their place in the world. Note: this session will require approximately 1 hour of pre-work, including taking two measures: the Gallup StrengthsFinder and the Strong Interest Inventory.

Make Mathematics Learning Come Alive
Limited Capacity filling up

Can we simultaneously teach mathematics in ways that engage all learners, that support students who need additional instructional supports, and that build student and teacher capacity to have meaningful conversations about math while working together to understand multiple solution strategies? Yes, we can! Instructional Routines are practical tools for teachers that use a predictable set of “thinking actions” to allow students and teachers to foreground the challenging work of deeper learning in mathematics. In this Deep Dive, participants will experience and unpack an inquiry-oriented instructional routine, then plan to enact it for themselves in a public rehearsal as a group. The goal will be for participants to be able to demonstrate what they have learned through modeling this routine for others.

What Does Instruction for Deeper Learning Actually Look Like?
Limited Capacity filling up

Let’s be honest: even in schools that value project-based learning, projects are not happening all the time, perhaps not even most of the time. And in more traditional schools, projects may not even be a choice. How can we ensure that Deeper Learning is being promoted all day long in schools of all types? How would instruction be different if that were the case? EL Education has a new book on Deeper Instruction, which addresses these questions. We will share the book’s framework and grapple together, both as students—engaging in lessons that model Deeper Instruction—and as educators, considering its application to our work.
