Listen to Joey's Equity Story

Joey Hunziker is a Senior Associate with the Innovation Lab Network at the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The ILN is a group of states working to advance policies and best practices that support personalized, deeper learning across the country. Before working at CCSSO, Joey worked in the Office of the State Superintendent of Education in DC, in the Early Learning Division. Joey finished his Masters in Public Administration and Policy, with a focus on Nonprofit Management, in 2014 at the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance (at the University of Washington). While in graduate school, Joey worked on issues of LGBT youth homelessness with the King County government, and was the co-chair of the Seattle LGBT Commission, which advises the Mayor and City Council on policies and budget items that impact the LGBT communities of Seattle. Before graduate school, Joey was a program manager with Proctors Theatre, a nonprofit performing arts center in Schenectady, New York. While at Proctors he built and expanded project-based learning programs that integrated digital media with ELA and Global History curricula to better engage underachieving 9th and 10th graders in school. He also worked to build and strengthen community engagement with the theatre, hosting youth art exhibits, a student film festival, and an LGBT film festival. Before leaving Proctors, Joey helped create an LGBT youth support group at Proctors in order to provide a safe community space for the region's youth. Joey got his start in education as a National Honor Society tutor, became a writing tutor in college, and after college taught High School theatre and dance. He cares deeply about student ownership of learning, and values collaboration and camaraderie in his professional and educational work.
